About the SouthCoast

The SouthCoast refers to a region that runs along the southern coast of Massachusetts. This culturally diverse and beautiful area runs between Cape Cod on the east and Rhode Island on the west. It is comprised of 14 towns and small cities and covers a broad socio-economic spectrum, from modest working towns to more affluent towns.

The region is anchored by its two harbor cities of New Bedford and Fall River, both of whom have deep roots in whaling and fishing. In the late 19th century, fishing brought a large population of Portuguese and Azoreans to the area. In addition to whaling and fishing, the SouthCoast communities also have a rich history in Native American settlers, arts, architecture, agriculture, and a once-booming textile industry.

The SouthCoast has direct access to fresh, right 'off-the-boat' seafood. A number of regional specialties can be sampled at the local bakeries and restaurants. There are many places to stay from motels to large chain hotels and local bed and breakfasts. Shopping is plentiful with big box stores, outlets, malls and small New England specialty shops. Following Route 6 along the coast offers scenic trips on the SouthCoast. Watch for points of interests or just take a side trip by heading toward the shoreline.
